Study Task 9 - REFLECTIVE WRITING

SYNTHESIS TASK
The combining of the constituent elements of seperate material of abstract entities into a single or unified entity (opposed to analysis) the separating of any material or abstract entity into its constituent elements.

A complex whole formed by combining.

My process: WHAT/ WHY/ HOW?

1. Analysed my intent for practice and how I can relate my theoretical/ cultural concerns within a cohesive practice.

2. Selection and analysis of appropriate sources and examples addressing issues of heritage and folk art.

3. Deconstruction of texts and quotes relating to industrial/ working visual practices, focusing on the value of these practices in cultural archives.

4. Identification of relevant contemporary illustrators who concern their practice with nostalgia/ tradition.

5. Triangulation of quotes and ideology, establishing an argument based on the value of organic observations against the function of museum collections.

6. Identification of similarities and parallels between traditional folk art and contemporary illustrators > how do their professional contexts differ?

7. Exploring accessible imagery of heritage and folk art through collage and drawing.

8. Applying theoretical concerns to constructed images through lettering and poetry.

9. Exploration of analogue processes appropriate to the subject matter and raising narratives around the place of heritage in culture and collections.

10. Synthesis of theoretical and practical concerns through combination of image and text into a book that establishes, but does not conclude, a dialogue around the value of the unsophisticated arts in culture.

501 ESSAY FEEDBACK

FEEDBACK SUMMARY:
-Thorough research and topical awareness
-Could be strengthened through definitions > what do you mean by heritage and the 'unsophisticated' arts
-Enhance language and terms through substantiated referencing or alternative terms
-Research the Museum of Folklore for visual references to aid reasoning
-Strong synthesis with linking topic to contemporary illustrators
-Strong use of examples and relevant sources but could benefit from providing a short introduction to lesser known authors

ACTIONS:
-Correct hazard referencing > ensure all quotes have page numbers and any text titles are in italics
-Add in some short definitions substantiated by scholars to define terms > use Carrington and Jones to establish these definitions
-Further explore issues of nostalgia > link to more contemporary practices

POINTS FOR TUTORIAL:
-How is the quality of my reasoning and content?
-I am hoping to resolve the discussion of nostalgia in my practical work and resolution using traditional media
-Would an exploration of type and lettering be appropriate in my practical work? e.g. traditional signage
